WiseChip Semiconductor Exhibits New Translucent and Flexible Display PMOLED for Wearables

By Richard McKayFebruary 2, 2017

The demand for OLED — the latest arrival in the world of display technologies — is gaining significant momentum from countless applications available in the display market today. Lately, the technology is drawing huge attention due to its commercialization and the inherent characteristics including flexibility, slimness, ultra-high brightness, and sunlight readability.

According to data stated in the reports of a premier research firm, IHS DisplaySearch, the global market for small-to-medium-sized OLED panels will grow at a steady pace of 15% annually for three consecutive years, starting from 2015. As illustrated in the report, the major chunk of the OLED market will be consumed by smart wearable devices that need advanced display technologies.

DIGITIMES Research predicts OLED panel shipments for smartwatches to grow at a CAGR of 73.2% from 2014 to 2017. In particular, the demand for PMOLED and e-paper displays will experience the highest growth, and panel makers based in Taiwan and China will have an absolute competitive edge over their competitors from Korea and Japan.

Taiwan-based OLED manufacturer WiseChip Semiconductor, the world’s second largest OLED panel maker, stated that the company has been focusing on wearable OLED for the last three years due to the overwhelming response coming across from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of wearables like the smartwatch and smart wristbands.

WiseChip Semiconductor, being an early entrant, is now enjoying the skyrocketing demand surge in the PMOLED wearable market. The company, which has globally shipped the second highest volume of PMOLED panels for back to back two years, has now unveiled its new product line of transparent OLED (T-OLED) and flexible PMOLED for use in wearables at various display shows worldwide.

According to a press release by WiseChip published in August 2016, the semiconductor company will have started mass production of transparent and flexible PMOLED by the end of 2016.

Previously, Wisechip showcased a 1.07" 160 x 136 transparent OLED targeted towards automotive HUD applications, but now the company plans to launch 4.1" transparent OLED displays with a transparency of 65% and brightness over 3,000 nits.

Besides the transparent OLEDs, Wisechip will introduce flexible PMOLED panels that have a resolution of 256 x 60, and a curvature of 40 mm. The company was noted saying it aims to make 5 mm-thick flexible PMOLED displays by 2017, as compared to its 40mm display products from 2015.

IHS DisplaySearch forecasts the sales for transparent and flexible PMOLED at $450 million (nearly 70 million units), up by 23% from $368 million (53.5 million units) in 2015. The growth in demand is expected to continue until 2018, with revenues reaching its peak in 2016. Industry analysts believe, most of the growth will come from the exponential demand for smart wearable devices.

WiseChip Semiconductor, a close observer of the OLED market trends and demand, has got a head start from its early R&D in transparent and flexible PMOLED displays. The company's latest product lineup of small-to-medium-sized PMOLEDs are now being exhibited worldwide. Standardized products, as well as customized displays as per specific module requirements of OEMs, will be made available in the market very soon.
