Vishay's New Planar Transformer Is More Efficient and Space-Saving Than Traditional Winding TechnologyMay 20, 2016
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., one of the world's largest fabricators of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, has always set an example of technology realization and yet again, they have proven their excellence. The company has unveiled a new Planar Transformer using the Planar Electro magnetics replacing the comparatively bulkier transformers that worked on the traditional winding technology.
Earlier, transformers used winding technology which required space, making the transformer more capacious. The Planar transformer delivers power from 1 kW to 3 kW which is approximately correspondent to the earlier one. The working frequency of this latest device ranges from 50 kHz to 400 kHz with excellent repeatability, although the elimination of windings has reduced the overall size of the transformer to 70 mm by 53 mm by 22 mm.
The smaller size saves space in the working sub-assemblies. Furthermore, the weight of the transformer has been cut down to merely 170 grams making the device extremely convenient to use. The Planar transformer can withstand temperature from -55oC to +125oC with the ability to dissipate the extra heat. The inductance range of the device varies from 49uH to 1500uH.
The device is offered in full-bridge, half-bridge and forward power supply topologies. It offers fast and easy connection, thanks to its tapped outputs. The device is RoHS compliant and does not contain any hazardous material. Moreover, Vishay will provide customization options to meet your individual needs.
The Planar transformers would extensively be used for the following applications:
- DC/DC power converters
- On-board chargers for electric vehicles
- Power control cooling units
- Solar inverters
The production of the devices will begin in early fourth quarter of 2016. Lead time for production quantities will be approximately 12 weeks for the PLA51 devices. Samples of the PLA51 are available now and are available to customers for testing purposes.
