Powerbox's Coreless Power Supply Platform for High Magnetic Field Environments

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. The magnetic field generared by the coil is in a range of 2 to 4 Tesla, which is a very large magnetic field. A magnetic field of this size has some direct effect on electrical equipment such as power supplies, where the transformers become saturated and impossible to operate in such an environment.  

Many systems embedded within the MRI machines are powered from outside the room; this measure not only lowers power efficiency, but also requires tight remote voltage regulation. Considering pulsed load, this tight remote voltage regulation is very challenging and complex to achieve.

For safety and patient comfort during the MRI session, some equipment requires the power supply to be as close as possible to the load, meaning the power-unit must operate safely while exposed to the high magnetic field generated by the coil. This is a real challenge for power supplies designers, causing them to think far outside the conventional box and to explore “coreless inductance energy transfer” in a power range exceeding 300W.

The Coreless Power Supply Platform developed by Powerbox is suitable for demanding industrial applications and research industries where electronic systems operate under high magnetic field environment. The technology, using the principle of transferring energy from an inductance to inductance, requires high efficiency technologies such as DSP control and advanced power topologies switching at 2.5 MHz and higher. MRI machines are a direct example where this innovation is necessary.
