Powerbox Announces New Defense Line of Power Supplies with High Flexibility for Highly Demanding Environments

By Rob GrayMarch 19, 2017

Leading power supply company Powerbox has announced the launch of its new Defense Line of ruggedized power solutions for highly demanding applications. The new release, comprising of seven power supplies, includes four AC/DC (DBA-DBB-DBC-DBD) and three DC/DC (DAA-DAB-DAC) power supplies over a power range of 50W to 1,200W.

The newly introduced DAx and DBx series incorporates a baseplate operating temperature range of -40 degrees C up to +100 degrees C, leveraged by a metal chassis format with a baseplate for conduction cooling. Both DAx and DBx can be mechanically and electrically ruggedized and configured with a conformal coating for the demanding EMC performance requirement standards in extremely challenging environments common in defense, marine, avionics, rugged railway and industrial applications. The modular build of the DAx and DBx series allows for increased versatility, configuring up to six outputs that can be connected in serial, parallel, or applied as a standalone output.

Powerbox Defense Line of ready to use DC/DC DAA/DAB/DAC power supplies include advanced features such as input transient protection, reverse voltage protection internal diode,  a high efficient input filter, and an internal fuse to safeguard against damages in the event of failures.

DAA/DAB/DAC Series

The DAA/DAB/DAC series has been developed for ruggedized use in defense and industrial areas, and is available with five input bus voltages, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 110VDC, with an extended output voltage range of 3.3VDC up to 48VDC.

Powerbox DAA/DAB/DAC product series has an electrical strength of 1,500Vrms input to ground, 3,000Vrms input to output and 500 Vrms output to ground, which facilitates safety and galvanic insulation purposes.

DBx Series

As for the DBx product line, the new series has been designed with an input to output of 3,000Vrms, an input to ground isolation of 1,500Vrms, and an output to ground of 500 Vrms. The DBx series comes with an active inrush current limiter, a power factor corrector, and an input filter. The input voltage range adheres to the universal 85VAC to 264VAC with up to 440 Hz source frequency.

Thanks to the innovative modular concept design, a wide range of output voltages from 2.0V up to 54V can be ordered in various configuration possibilities from single to six outputs. The DBx series is designed to meet the EN50155 and EN50121 safety standards and is also compliant with the IEC and EN 60950-1 regulations required for railway applications.

DAx Series

Another new launch from Powerbox, the DAx series, can be configured for ruggedized and harsh transient performance on 12V and 28V platforms according to MIL-STD-1275 and DEF STAN 61-5. The DAx defense line series can be also deployed for avionics applications in accordance to MIL-STD-704, DO-160, and ABD100.

“The release of Powerbox Defense Line products strengthens Powerbox’s COTS/MOTS product offering when standard is not enough,” says Martin Fredmark, VP Product Management at Powerbox. “Combining state of the art design with a built-in flexibility for demanding applications such as defense and avionics, our flexible, modular design concept further enhances our service leadership strategy.”

Powerbox Defense Line products, designed to excel in extremely demanding environments, incorporate internal over-temperature circuit (OTP), which protects the units in the case of overheating with automatic recovery functionalities. The Defense Line power series comprises of four conduction-cooled models, ideal for applications in the 150W to 1200W power range. The output voltage of the series is adjustable and protected against unexpected or permanent short-circuit situations.

Powerbox AC/DC defense line of power supplies have been designed for high availability and a short time-to-market to meet both commercial and military off-the-shelf (COTS/MOTS) business models. The ready to use DC/DC, AC/DC DBx series, housed in a metal chassis, is design-optimized to deliver high-efficiency power solutions in demanding and ruggedized applications.

Powerbox, keeping environmental protection in mind, has configured its defense line products to meet MIL-STD-810 standards, along with railway, marine, and avionics requirements. The series conforms to 55022 class A in compliance with EMC performance and can be optionally designed to fulfill the MIL-STD-461 conducted emission.

Powerbox's Defense line of power supplies are RoHS compliant, lead-free, and manufactured in accordance with environmental regulations.
