Cree's New High-Power LED Promises Low System Costs for High-Performance Lighting Applications

Cree Inc., global leader in premium LEDs, announced the launch of its new XLamp series of MHB-B LEDs this month. Developed in accordance with 4.0 Premium requirements of DesignLights Consortium® (DLC), the high-power LEDs enable lower system costs for high lumen, high-efficiency LED designs.

Cree's new generation of high-power ceramic LEDs, as compared to its previous release MHB-A LED, record a 13 percent increase in lumens per watt. MHB-B provides up to 931 lumens at 85°C, practically unattainable by any mid-power LEDs.

“We evaluated many low-cost LED options but found that they require very large PCBs and optics and do not provide good lifetimes,” said Frank Chen, VP fixture department, Shenghui/Sengled. “We selected the MHB-B LED because its leading light output, efficacy, and reliability will allow us to meet increasing industry requirements such as the DLC® 4.0 Premium category at the lowest system cost.”

Technical Specifications of XLamp® MHB-B LEDs

Introduced in a slim 5mm x 5mm packaging, XLamp features the cutting-edge EasyWhite® technology, enabling flexibility for lighting manufacturers to easily integrate MHB designs without the need for any additional investment.

Cree illustrates how XLamps can leverage designs significantly lighter and slimmer than mid-power LEDs. In high-bay reference applications, MHB-B LEDs power up 24,000 lumens with up to 130 lumens per watt system efficacy. High bays deploying the MHB-B are sized down by 44 percent, with a 36 percent smaller diameter in comparison to those developed with traditional mid-power LEDs.

Sporting a varied array of color temperatures from 2700K to 6500K, MHB-B has high CRI and multiple voltage options. Based on Cree’s high-power ceramic technology, the LEDs project an impressive product life cycle of 60,000 hours at 105°C.
